The Department of Commerce was established in 1998 following the introduction of degree course in commerce. Ever since its inspection, the department has earnestly endeavored to achieve the lofty objectives of its establishment making maximum use of the available resources.
The department is an undergraduate department with B.com Travel and Tourism as its course. The programme is designed with the objective of equipping the students to cope with the challenges and changes in the industrial and business world. The course of study shall extent over three years and from 2010 onwards as per the regulations of the University of Kerala, semester system is introduced for the Degree course and the programme is called First Degree Programme in Commerce-Choice Based Credit and Semester System. The course contain six semesters having duration of 3 years. Core Courses include 16 compulsory courses in the major subject and complementary courses include 4 courses in the allied subjects. From 2019 admission onwards, considering the growing demand, the department has changed its optional subject from travel and tourism to Finance.
As the only center of Under Graduate education in commerce in this rural area, the department has adequately responded to local demands admitting students who are economically backward and academically average. Nevertheless in the past few years of its existence the Department has been able to achieve commendable result in university examinations. When it started its journey Prof M. T George was the HoD(1998-2004) followed by him Prof. Saramma Thomas (2004-2011) and Prof George Daniel (2011-2013) lead the department. From 2013 onwards Dr. Ambily C R is serving as the Head of the department with the support of other three permanent faculties, Dr. Deepa T. S, Ms. Maja K Koshy, and Ms. Ansu Susan Jacob.
The Department always has a positive approach towards challenging educational environment. It realized the need to prepare the students to think globally and meet global changes in this fast changing world and there by aims at developing commercially efficient citizen .ie equipping the students to cope with the emerging trends and challenges in the industrial and business world.
