Botany

The Department of Botany, St. Stephen’s College, Pathanapuram was established in 1982, with B.Sc. degree course under the University of Kerala, with Zoology and Chemistry as complementary subjects. The Department has four full time faculty with diverse research interest in Tissue culture, Mycology, Biosystematics, Phycology, Biodiversity analysis etc. Among the four faculty members, three are Ph. D. holders and one member is holding M. Phil and doing Ph. D. as part-time mode. Very Rev. Aphrem Ramban (Rev. Fr. Oommen P. Abraham) was the principal and the head of the Department till 1994. As the glorious years of roll in to the history, Botany Department contributing significantly to the development of the college and the society.

The Department now flourished with research programme leading to Ph. D. in areas such as Phycology and Plant Systematics. Dr. Praveen Dhar T is a research guide under the University of Kerala. Central University of Kerala sponsored minor project is undertaken by the Department under the supervision of Dr. Praveen Dhar T. and a major project sponsored by Department of Environment and Climate change, Government of Kerala is also co-investigated by Rev. Fr. Roy John and Dr. Praveen Dhar T.

The Department has two laboratories for practical work and one research lab with several facilities and internet access. There is a well maintained museum with more than 300 specimens. The Department herbarium has about 700 sheets in its collection.

The academic mile stones of the Department were also noticeable. Ms. Jisa John secured second rank during the year 2014 and Mr. Yadu S. secured fifth rank during the academic year 2019. The Department also creating good academic record with students having distinctions and first classes.
